Another week, another batch of songs that have tickled my fancy… I’ve been going back in time and rediscovering bands that I’ve neglected as of late - namely the UK’s noisecore powerhouse Beecher (who have recently reformed for a small number of shows) and one of my favourite bands, Japanese post-rock/screamo juggernauts ENVY! The latter will be releasing a new album on October 12 called Recitation - to say I’m excited is an understatement! It hasn’t been all hard and heavy though. The Smiths ‘The Queen is Dead’ has been on heavy rotation, and I’m convinced that no indie pop band EVER will ever reach the perfection that is ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’. The smoky folk-noir of Neko Case has also been a source of much goodness, as has Mos Def’s ‘Black on Both Sides’.
Here’s my top 15 for this week:
ENVY - Dreams Coming to an End
BEECHER - I Won’t Miss or Be Missed
NEKO CASE - This Tornado Loves You
THE SMITHS - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
MOS DEF - Umi Says
DARKTHRONE - Circle the Wagons
HIGH ON FIRE - Frost Hammer
BLACK BREATH - Black Sin
ALCEST - Ecailles De Lune (Part II)
THE GET UP KIDS - Holiday
THRICE - Deadbolt
COLISEUM - Blind in One Eye
ISIS - Grinning Mouths
CURSIVE - The Recluse
COALESCE - The Villain We Won’t Deny
